Kyungeun Son: Ransom

December 2025 - February 2026

Opening Friday, December 19   18 - 20h

Kyungeun Son instigates objects, video and performance in novel combinative ways. Medium definitions are reconstructed and blurred. Sculptures enact roles statically. Son merges the theatricalities of contemporary culture: the stage, the screen, the white cube. Here the exhibition setting contains a cast of three sculptures with disparate forms. A box, a concertina and a key; united by included utterances and a shared titular and physical genetic source code. Each is fabricated from between 30 and 100 percent of Brimnes wardrobes, a modern IKEA furniture line that, like the pieces themselves, is itself a construction assembled from assembled wood in the form of particleboard. This material’s tension between the mass produced and the domestic rests seemingly publicly resolved, against which Son’s creative destruction, through both the official rules of assembly and more truculent means, operates. Her material changes are driven by process towards formal outcomes: a vocabulary of physicality, space, storage and surface that cycles through its original self, assembling something like a genre of family.
