Annamarie Ho

Suit and Fan

May 15 - July 3, 2021

Finissage Saturday, July 3   16 - 20h

Annamarie Ho paintlessly paints, forcing content into form and demanding those forms maintain an existence as readable content. She nicks away at hegemonies in international popular cultures and the towering weight of macho grandaddy art. Formula One racing, excursions to home improvement stores, post painterly abstraction, specific objects. Hers is a practice of material transformations and shiftings of scale and tone, carousing as she indicts. Frisking codes of color and material and reclaiming and rerouting the straight line of hard edge composition. Greenberg’s “favored openness or clarity” is exposed and muddied, yet Ho’s visual impact is one of vigor and lustiness. The walls and floor join fabric and porcelain as painterly spaces in an installation that bridges early Barney (racing on the Isle of Man) as it does Gober’s uncanny. In a clean abridgement, one suit and one fan, set within red and yellow: enticing, advertising bold, caution, slowdown and stop.
