I hate you.
Hate is only one of many responses
- Frank O’Hara, Poem
Hate defines social boundaries. Humans are more likely to bond over a shared negative feeling than a shared positive one. In actions, societal and personal, the human race struggles to remain emotionally competent.
One of the great conditions of anger and hatred is, that you must tell and believe lies against the hated object, in order, as we said, to be consistent.
- William Makepeace Thackeray, Vanity Fair
Individuals attack each other physically, verbally, under the cover of anonymity. Sleight of hand manipulates and fortifications separate. Safety is used as an excuse and information is bent to disguise. Bias drifts toward prejudice and then discrimination before shifting to violence.
How strange! I thought, though everybody hated and despised each other, they could not avoid loving me.
- Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights
